The bulletin below looks a little different this week.  We are now able to have hymn books in hand for those gathering in person and have adjusted our printed bulletin a little bit.  What you will notice is that the Eucharistic pryaer is shortened to generally include only the responses.

And the picture above is our front garden on Saturday October 16th!

Sunday October 17, 2021 - 21st Pentecost

Prelude

Welcome

Opening Hymn - CP #393 - Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

2

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

3

To all life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish, but nought changeth Thee.

4

Great Father of Glory, pure Father of Light
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render, O help us to see:
’Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee.

5

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit always be with you. And also with you.

Collect for Purity

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect Prayer

Suffering God, in whose name we seek glory for ourselves: cast down the idols that serve our fear and guilt, our need for blame, for punishment; direct our angry hearts to him who bears our wounds where there is no need to fight; through Jesus Christ, the true God and servant of all.  Amen.

The Readings

Hebrews 5:1-10; Psalm 91:9-16; Mark 10:35-45

Homily - The Reverend Canon Ruthanne Ward

Hear, O Israel

Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

This is the first and the great commandment.

The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself.

There is no commandment greater than these.

Prayers of the People

Confession and Absolution (from the Church of England)

God’s whole creation groans. The land produces thorns and thistle and longs to be set free. Our sin affects all around us. We confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence is kept.

Creator God, we confess that we have not honoured and obeyed you. We have broken our relationships with one another, abused your fragile creation, wounded your love and marred your holy image in us. We are sorry and ashamed and repent of all our sins. Father, forgive us. Lead us from apathy to love. Strengthen us as stewards of your precious people and of your glorious creation, for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for us. Amen

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us a kingdom that cannot be destroyed: forgive you your sins, open your eyes to God’s truth, strengthen you to do God’s will and give you the joy of his kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you.  And also with you.

Offertory Hymn - CP # 487 - Where Charity and Love Prevail

Where charity and love prevail, there God is ever found; Brought here together by Christ’s love, by love are we thus bound.

With grateful joy and holy fear God’s charity we learn; Let us with heart and mind and soul now love God in return.

Forgive we now each other’s faults as we our faults confess; And let us love each other well in Christian holiness.

Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease; Be God’s the glory that we seek, be ours God’s holy peace.

Let us recall that in our midst dwells God’s begotten Son; As members of his body joined, we are in Christ made one.

No race or creed can love exclude, if honored be God’s name; Our family embraces all whose Father is the same.

Prayer Over the Gifts

Eternal God, your word inspires our faith.  May we who offer you our praise trust you in all things.  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer for Ordinary Time (from the Church of England)

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.  It is right to give thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, Lord God, …

… that with angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord….

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit ….Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ

Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

The Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

Communion

Prayer After Communion

God of peace, you have nourished us in this sacrament with the body and blood of Christ.  May we who have taken holy things keep faith in our hearts and lives, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.  Amen.

The Doxology

Glory to God, whose power working in us can do more than we can ask or imagine.  Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.  Amen.

The Blessing

Closing Hymn - CP# 585 - Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service

1. Lord, whose love through humble service Bore the weight of human need, Who upon the cross, forsaken, Offered mercy’s perfect deed, We, Your servants, bring the worship Not of voice alone, but heart, Consecrating to Your purpose Ev’ry gift that you impart.

2. Still Your children wander homeless; Still the hungry cry for bread; Still the captives long for freedom; Still in grief we mourn our dead. As, O Lord, Your deep compassion Healed the sick and freed the soul, Use the love Your Spirit kindles Still to save and make us whole.

3. As we worship, grant us vision, Till Your love’s revealing light In its height and depth and greatness, Dawns upon our quickened sight, Making known the needs and burdens Your compassion bids us bear, Stirring us to tireless striving, Your abundant life to share.

4. Called by worship to Your service, Forth in Your dear name we go, To the child, the youth, the aged, Love in living deeds to show; Hope and health, goodwill and comfort, Counsel, aid, and peace we give, That Your servants, Lord, in freedom May Your mercy know and live.
